CELPIP Speaking Opinion – Children to have Their own Smartphones

I think it’s great to see more children with smartphones these days. It’s definitely a growing trend and I think it has some really positive effects on the kids. One of the biggest benefits is that kids can stay in contact with their friends. If they are having problems understanding their homework, they can just send their friends a message asking for help. A lot of people think that smartphones prevent kids from spending time outdoors. In my experience, the opposite is true. Very often my nephew will get a text from his classmates inviting him to play soccer with them or go on a bike ride. I think if he didn’t have his phone, he wouldn’t go out as much.

Another reason I think smartphones are great is because there is so much information online these days. Having a phone can make the learning process much easier for a kid. It teaches them how to do research and improves their problem solving skills. Very often my nephew will tell me a random fact about another country and I ask him where he learned that. He always says, “I asked Google!” A lot of people are concerned about the questionable content online these days. I think that’s a valid concern, but there are things parents can do to safeguard against these things. For example, there are programs parents can install on the phone which prevent access to pornography and other inappropriate material. I don’t think most parents know about these safeguards. The last reason I would give for why kids should have phones is that they are safer in an emergency. celpipmaterial.com

If they are ever in danger, they can call 911 or call me at home. I feel much better knowing that my nephew has a phone with him all the time. Anyway, those are some reasons why I think it’s good for kids to have cellphones.
