CELPIP Speaking Opinion Gap Between Rich and Poor
I believe the government should increase taxes on the rich for several reasons. First off, rich people actually don’t pay their fair share in taxes. They just hire accountants to find all the tax loopholes for them. So, the government not only needs to increase the taxes, but they also need to close the tax loopholes. Someone might respond by saying, “Well, if you close the tax loopholes, rich people will just move their money overseas.” That’s a very good point, and I would say governments should prevent that from happening. The recent discovery of the Panama Papers showed that rich people will go to any extreme to avoid taxes. That’s why the government needs to corner these people and force them to pay their fair share in taxes. Another reason I think governments should increase taxes on the rich is because many services in the country are paid for by taxes. For example, schools, highways, and hospitals are all paid for by taxes. Rich people can afford to contribute more to the country. I mean, which is more important, that a rich person buys a new yacht, or that a school is renovated? I would say the school is much more important. That brings me to my third reason, rich people simply don’t need the amount of luxury they currently have. If a rich person like Paris Hilton buys a handbag for $80,000 instead of helping poor people, that proves that she’s greedy and the government should tax her more. Rich people have a bad reputation when it comes to helping poor people. celpipmaterial.com
Not only that, but poor people are often exploited by the rich. That’s why I think the government needs to step in and make sure poor people are adequately taken care of.
