Tips:
CELPIP Speaking Task 5 is called “Compare and Persuade”. Both of these are done at the same time.
You persuade your family members by comparing the options. The formula is simple: Opinion + Reasons
In this question, you need to argue against the gym. What points could you make?
1. It’s far from home.
2. We want to be able to exercise from home
3. We are lazy and won’t drive there often.
4. Family members’ schedules don’t match.
5. We only have one vehicle, so the whole family would need to go at one time.
You could say anything, but the point of this question is that you need to persuade your family that your choice is better than theirs. To do that, you need to show the strengths of your choice and the weaknesses of their choice.
Vocabulary:
Coordinate (align)
Membership (pass)

Sample Answer
Hey guys,
I know you want to get the gym membership, but I think it would be much better to get the weight set. The main problem with the gym membership is that we have to drive 15 mins to get there. We only have one car and our schedules are all different. I think we’re too lazy to coordinate our schedules. Even though it would be awesome to hit the sauna every evening, I’m concerned that we would only go once or twice a week, so that wouldn’t be worth the $400/yr. If we have a weight set at home, we can exercise anytime we want. Another major consideration is the cost. CELPIP Material .com
The weight set is a fraction of the price! We could use the $300 savings to buy an exercise bike or a treadmill! The other thing is that if we got the weight set, we would have the same kind of weights that we would use at the gym anyway. And the weights have a lifetime warranty, so we don’t have to worry about losing our investment! Overall, I think it would be much better to buy the weight set.
