Tips:

CELPIP Speaking Task 5 is called “Compare and Persuade”. Both of these are done at the same time.

In this question, think about the purpose of the event. It’s a farewell party. Which option would be the most suitable for a party like this? Think about your friend who is moving away. What does he/she like to do?

In task 5, it’s a great idea to use an “even though sentence. For example, “Even though the lake is farther away, I think it would be better because John loves being in nature.”

When you’re talking to more than one friend, it is best to start by saying, “Hey guys”.

Vocabulary:

Unemployed (no job)
Socialize (talk with each other)
Outdoors (nature)
Potluck (everyone brings food to share)
Have a blast (great time)

CELPIP Speaking Comparing Farewell Party Options

Hey guys,

I know you’re suggesting going to a theme park, but I think it would be better if we had a picnic by the lake. John really loves the outdoors. The nice thing about going to the lake is that there’s free canoeing there. I think everyone would have a blast. We need to remember that this party is for John, so we should pick the option he would enjoy the most. Even though the theme park has unlimited rides, we wouldn’t really have a good chance to socialize. I know the lake is a lot farther away, but I think everyone would really enjoy the drive through the mountains. The other thing is that the picnic would be a lot cheaper. Some of John’s friends are unemployed at the moment, so it’s not fair if we ask them to pay $60 for the farewell party. Also, having a potluck by the lake would be so much fun! I love trying all the different foods that people bring to potlucks.

Anyway, I think it would definitely be better to go to the lake than to go to the theme park.
