CELPIP Speaking Task 5 is called “Compare and Persuade”. Both of these are done at the same time.
This question is different from task 1 “giving advice”. In task 5, you’re trying to persuade your friend to agree with your choice. In both questions, your language should be polite.
Regardless of your choice, curling is much cheaper and you can do the activity more frequently. How are you going to handle these aspects? As you go through this book, I want to help you get better at handling these challenges. I would recommend using one of these sentences:
Even though…. or
I know that…
Even though curling is much cheaper, grandma gave us enough money to cover the cost of skiing.
I know that you guys want to choose curling, but I think we should pick hockey because it will be better exercise.

Sample Answer
Hey guys,
I’m really excited about doing a family activity together this winter. I know you guys are suggesting curling, but I think skiing would be a lot better for us. One of the reasons we wanted to do an activity together is so that we would get fresh air and exercise. Curling is fun, but it won’t really get our blood pumping. Think of the great exercise we would get if we hit the slopes every weekend! Even though curling is a lot cheaper, the cost doesn’t really matter because grandma gave us enough money to cover any activity we choose. CELpipmaterial.com
I know curling is a lot more frequent, but the thing is that we’re pretty busy during the week and I don’t think we could even go that often. I have band practice twice a week, and I’m not sure when I would find time to do my homework if we also went curling three times a week. I think one all-day activity would be better than three short activities during the week. Anyway, those are the reasons why I think we should definitely pick skiing!
